Newport Public Library
Bike4Books Bicycle Tour!
September 30, 2023

Over the past 24 years Newport Public Library’s annual bicycle tour has been a popular opportunity for recreation, food, and much needed support for a great community resource. We are pleased to announce that we will have an in-person-on-the-road bike tour again on Sept. 30, 2023.

Here are some updates on our Sept. 30, 2023 Bike4Books bicycle tour:

This year there are multiple bridges under repair in Perry County. This has changed where we will start and end our course, in order to keep the course as close to the normal ride as possible. This year, please arrive at the Ickesburg Lion’s Club Park instead of Little Buffalo State Park. You will start and end the ride there. Lunch will also be served there. You are already familiar with the site, as it has been a rest stop for the 50K and 100K courses for the past few years. We are very grateful to the Ickesburg Lion’s Club for allowing us to host our ride there. Other changes to the 50K and 100K courses are very minor. The 25K course will be new to everyone, as will the Family Fun Ride.

You will not be able to get to Ickesburg from Little Buffalo State Park, as the bridge on Little Buffalo Rd is NOT PASSABLE. Please consult Google maps for an alternate route to Ickesburg from your origination point. UPDATE: The bridge on Little Buffalo Rd is now open; however, we had done all of our publicity not knowing that this would be the case. We will still start and end the ride at Ickesburg Park, but you can get to the park by any way convenient to you, including Little Buffalo Rd.

WE WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU AT REGISTRATION ON THE DAY OF THE RIDE, WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE PRE-REGISTERED. BECAUSE OF THE BRIDGE WORK, WE EXPECT MORE REGISGTATIONS THE DAY OF THE RIDE.

We want to stress the importance of signing back in after your ride. We take our riders’ safety very seriously. We want to make sure everyone is back and has a chance to eat before we leave the park. If all of the riders sign back in, we know when it is safe to pack up and go home.

We have to order t-shirts on Sept. 17, with no exceptions. Many of you will pre-register online by that cutoff date. These pre-registered people will get a free t-shirt. We will once again have a small number of t-shirts from previous rides for sale for $5 per shirt.

There will be lots of food at the rest stops, as usual, and whoopie pies at the rest stops again this year. The course will be closed at 4 PM, and we will begin to pack up the lunch about that time.

We are excited to see you all again, and we thank you for supporting Newport Public Library! This year we need to make repairs to our HVAC system, so the fundraising is especially important.
