Newport Public Library History

Newport Public Library was started in 1914 by Newport Civic Club members. The library’s first location was in the director’s office of the old Fourth Street school building (currently an apartment building). The women of the Newport Civic Club spent countless hours gathering donated books, and raising funds to purchase new books to make up the 400-volume collection. When the day of the grand opening arrived, the Newport Band played for the triumphant celebration, as Mayor John S. Eby made the presentation of the new library to Newport Borough.

After being housed in a number of rented spaces, the library celebrated another grand opening in November ,1988, when the doors of its new building were opened to the public. The dream of having a permanent home was realized through the generosity of Philip and Carolyn Bosserman, and Charles and Gladys Bosserman; as well as through matching funds from the State of Pennsylvania; private contributions from individuals, businesses, and organizations; and countless donated hours of assistance by volunteers.

Today, Newport Public Library contains over 35,000 materials in its collection, and offers a progressive program of library services to inform, enrich, enlighten, and entertain all members of the Newport community. The library aims to be a leading resource for information, a center for lifelong learning, and a meeting place that actively integrates life in the community with change in the world.

Do you have anecdotes, memorabilia, or pictures of previous Newport Public Library locations, functions, or volunteers, which you would allow the library to add to this history? Please contact the library at 717-567-6860 to arrange the details!
